NEP Saarthis, which is an in-house wing for the awareness of the education policies of the country conducted a debate competition in collaboration with the department of English, backed up by the IQAC, conducted a debate competition on 4th of October 2024. It was a very specific topic which required in-depth knowledge and research in that field to participate and yet, it saw the enthusiastic participation of four teams from across the streams. The students showed their engagement with the educational policies and politics, which show their overall education as students of the society at graduate level.
The Department of English at St. Joseph’s Degree and PG College organized a National Webinar titled “A Pathway to Premiere Research Publications in ELT and English Literature,” offering valuable insights into research and publication in these fields. Dr. Nitesh Narnolia, the speaker, emphasized the importance of selecting appropriate research topics, adhering to academic standards, and identifying reputable journals for publication. He also addressed challenges faced by researchers, such as navigating peer review, ethical considerations, and ensuring originality in research.
Joseph’s Literary Club (JLC) has conducted a college level essay writing competition in collaboration with Sri Satya Sai Seva Organization, which is a stepping-stone to a state-level competition. The event saw a participation of a whopping 129 students from across the departments of the college and expressed their views on permanence of ethics and morality. The topic was ‘Money comes and goes but Morality comes and grows’. The current societal situation which is plummeting with rising corruption has to be dealt with from the roots and that is by enlightening the young generation on the transience of money.
Joseph’s English Literary Club (JELC) has conducted an Intercollegiate Creative Writing Competition - Freedom’s Pen on the account of celebrating 78th Independence day. The centerpiece of the competition was a visually stimulating picture collage that captured the essence of India's culture, struggle for freedom and its subsequent journey as a nation.It served as a powerful prompt, inspiring participants from various colleges to delve deep into the rich tapestry of Indian history and express their thoughts and emotions through the written word.
The ‘voice out’ as what we named the elocution competition was filled with polyphonic voices from different perspectives, standpoints and views of advocacy. The attendees formed a standard conception of what communication is. The need to inculcate the habit of putting a conscious effort towards improving communication skills.
An Intercollegiate poster making competition on ‘Ancient Indian Knowledge Systems’ where the students were encouraged to delve deep into the relics of the grandeur of the ancient Indian Knowledge systems which couldn’t see the limelight because of failure to be preserved. The astonishing knowledge systems were brought to memory and light either digitally and manually by the making of posters by students from various colleges. Students were able to picturize ancient disciplines varying from economics to astronomy back in those days when knowledge was yet to be discovered epistemologically.
an Intercollegiate painting competition with the title ‘India Through My Eyes’ where the students were asked to paint the vision of India through their eyes as to how they view it. Shimmering ideas smeared in iridescent colors were presented touching upon the diverse situation of the magnificent India’s uniqueness. Multiple perspectives were driven into the paintings.
Joseph’s English Literary Club (JELC) has conducted an Intercollegiate letter writing competition with the title ‘Letter to the PM’ where the students were asked to discuss one of the schemes/initiative taken by the government and discuss it in either positive or negative way, i.e., critically review the governmental initiatives and their efficacy. Students from colleges across the city submitted wonderful letters with content so diverse and examining tiny details of the initiatives and their applicability in rural and urban areas.
The Department of English in collaboration with IQAC has conducted a workshop for Telangana Police on "Effective Communication skills and Report Writing" with Dr.Sangeetha, Dr.Sindhoor and Ms.Manisha as resource persons. The topics included encoding and decoding Nonverbal cues in interrogation; crisis communication ; effective communication with heterogeneous stakeholders; Body language( Kinesics), Proxemics; Email Correspondence;Writing Police Reports; Using AI in report generation, etc.
The Induction program for the fresh batch of UG students included insights into the various courses offered by the Department of English which focused on English language proficiency, Employability, Soft Skills and Life Skills. The session also gave an overview of the Literary club - JELS, emphasizing upon infotainment being the core essence of the Literary activities taken up by the department. The students were also given awareness about extra curricular credits for their literary pursuits.
Women Empowerment Cell in collaboration with IQAC, organized a session on Menstrual Hygiene and Life Skills. Students were educated on menstrual health, dispelling myths and promoting open discussions. It covered the proper use of sanitary products and importance of regular health check-ups. Additionally, the session incorporated life skills such as emotional wellbeing, self-care and effective communication followed by an interactive Q&A session. The session encouraged open, stigma-free discussions fostering a supportive environment for the students to clear their doubts
Bibliophile Gala- a grand literary event, was successfully on 19th June at Jubilee Hall to mark The National Reading Day. About 80 UG students vibrantly participated in debates ( books vs movies) and many challenges such as Judge the book by its cover, Spin a yarn, literary quiz, etc. The Students were motivated to engage in reading activities such as book pools,book exchanges apart from making book reading a daily habit for enhanced knowledge and life skills.
Highlighted the importance of how the course helps one to develop writing skills in the context of writing effectively for social media, blogs, business writing, copy editing, research and project writing.
The attendees formed a standard conception of what is communication, realized its importance in everyday life and how it is overlooked, realized the need to inculcate the habit of putting a conscious effort towards improving communication skill. They were also taught techniques for enhancing Communication Skills.
Listening skill is extremely crucial for communication as well as to develop interpersonal skills. Several techniques for attentive listening were shared by Dr. Sindhoor to the new students of B.Com programme on 12th June

The literary committee went on a field trip to Chowmuhalla- a heritage site as a part of the creative project on 3rd February 2024. 47 students along with 5 faculty members participated in this educational tour. This field trip was very informative and enriching experience to the students.
WEC successfully organised various events like Poster Making, open Mic, voice out, poetry recitation and other fun activities themed around Gender equality today on 18th January 2024 at Joseph's hall.It was a thought provoking session where students presented unusual perspectives and spoke eloquently on a range of topics like sexual harassment, going beyond pseudo feminism, why talking about PCODs is a taboo, breaking gender stereotypes, toxic masculinity etc.
Murmurings The Department of English Literary Committee has organised Open -Mic on 20th December 2023 The title of the Activity is Murmurings: where conversations end the highlights of the Activity are Poetry recited by students of 2nd year, Verbal walk-through of their personal experiences by the students. The following were the Key Takeaways by the students.The students were able to express their feelings freely by speaking. The Summary of the Activity is The participants were given 2 minutes to voice out their views on any topic of their choice. They could recite poetry or give a speech, they can speak about their feelings for 2 minutes each
